Reflection
As per the course description, MMI 498 is the culmination of the Medical Informatics Program. The Reflection Papers gave me the opportunity to review what I have learned in my previous classes leading up to this class. From learning about the OSI Model, to creating a RFP to presenting to the Board of Directors, the MMI Program gave me the tools I need to become a valuable contributor in the area of Medical Informatics.
For our group project, we were assigned to work on a solution to identify duplicate patients in a patient database using Intelligent Medical Object's Master Patient Index. I used to consider searching for a patient's information in a database and realizing that the patient is in a database numerous times, as an annoyance. This project heightened my awareness that this issue is more than just an annoyance. It is a problem that demands a solution. Working along side Hugo Fernandes, Mel Ocampo, Mari Pierre St. Piere, Steven Stanford and Rodney Williams, on IMO's iMPI, made me realize how inaccurate information plays a major role in causing medical errors. Our goal is to create a process so that using iMPI, duplicate records are identified in real-time and creation of new ones are prevented.
